1st Workshop on Maritime Computer Vision (MaCVi)

Organizing Committee

Benjamin Kiefer
Benjamin Kiefer is a Ph.D researcher from the Cognitive Systems Group at University of Tuebingen. He is part of a large state-funded research project called Avalon. This multi-consortium project’s goal is to develop an unmanned aerial vehicle to assist in humanitarian Search and Rescue scenarios. As part of this project, several publications in the domain of vision aboard UAVs in the maritime context emerged. His research focuses on deep learning-based computer vision algorithms in aerial scenarios.
Fabio
Fabio Poiesi is a Research Scientist at Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Trento (Italy). Fabio Poiesi received his Ph.D. degree in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science from Queen Mary University of London (UK). Fabio Poiesi participated in several European Projects, including H2020 REPLICATE, EIT UAV-Retina, H2020 MiMEX, and he is now Principal Investigator in JPISHIELD. Fabio Poiesi is responsible for several industrial projects related to Machine Vision and Augmented Reality applications. He serves as Area Chair in IEEE International Conference on Pattern Recognition. Fabio Poiesi conducts research and development activities in the contexts of multi-object detection and tracking, human behaviour understanding, 3D reconstruction and scene understanding, 6D pose estimation, robotic navigation, machine vision and extended reality.
Matej
Matej Kristan received a Ph.D from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana in 2008. He is a full professor and a vice chair of the department of artificial intelligence at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science, University of Ljubljana. He is president of the IAPR Slovenian pattern recognition society, Associate Editor of IJCV and served as an AC at CVPR2022. He has co-organized over thirteen workshops and conferences, and he received eighteen research excellence and teaching awards. His group has contributed to several leading benchmarks and datasets in visual object tracking and vision for autonomous boats, and developed the first deep learning method HIDRA for coastal flood prediction that rivals numerical geophysics models. His research interests include visual object tracking, anomaly detection, video segmentation, vision for mobile robotics and deep geophysics.
Janez Pers
Janez Perš received Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FE), University of Ljubljana in 2004. He is currently Assistant professor at the Laboratory for Machine Intelligence at the FE, University of Ljubljana. His research interests lie in object tracking, human motion analysis, dynamic-motion-based biometry, machine vision, autonomous vehicles and distributed systems.
Fabio Andrade
Fabio Andrade is an associate professor in robotics and autonomous systems at the University of South-Eastern Norway and a research scientist at NORCE Norwegian Research Centre. He has a Ph.D. in Engineering Cybernetics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and has several published works on robotics and machine learning. He was an adjunct professor at the Federal Center of Technological Education of Rio de Janeiro and a technical advisor at TracSense, and is the Former Chair of the IEEE Norway Chapter of Robotics and Control Systems and co-founder of Umaker. He worked at the Brazilian Department of Airspace Control and was an assistant professor at the Brazilian Naval Academy.

Alexandre Bernardino
Alexandre Bernardino (PhD 2004) is a tenured Associate Professor at the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Senior Researcher at the Computer and Robot Vision Laboratory of the Institute for Systems and Robotics at IST, the faculty of engineering of Lisbon University. He participated in more than 20 national and international research projects, being the principal investigator in 5 of them. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and the chaired the IEEE Portugal Robotics and Automation Chapter during 2015-19. His main research interests focus on the application of computer vision, machine learning, cognitive science and control theory to advanced robotics and automation systems. He is the Principal Investigator of national projects Projects VOAMAIS (www.voamais.pt) and FIREFRONT (www.firefront.pt) that use aerial image analysis for the monitoring of maritime and forest environments. He and colleagues created the Seagull Dataset, a large dataset of aerial images of maritime environments. He has (co-) organized seven conferences and workshops.
Matthew Dawkins
Matthew Dawkins is a Staff R&D Engineer on Kitware’s Computer Vision Team located in Clifton Park, New York. Matt currently heads the development of Kitware’s Video and Image Analytics for Multiple Environments (VIAME) platform. Originally funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), VIAME has multiple ongoing projects relating to wildlife detection (e.g. scallops, fish, marine mammals) in multiple locations around the world. Additionally, Matt has managed several SBIR projects funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, centered around object tracking and video search. Matt received his master’s degree in computer science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2011. As a graduate student, he focused on underwater image processing and object detection.
Jenni Raitoharju
Jenni Raitoharju received her Ph.D. degree at Tampere University of Technology, Finland in 2017. She currently works as a Senior Research Scientist at the Finnish Environment Institute and, starting in September 2022, as an Assistant Professor in University of Jyväskylä, Finland. She is the chair of Young Academy Finland 2019-2022. Her research interests include machine learning and pattern recognition methods along with applications in biomonitoring and autonomous systems.
